Forbidden — Letters -1979-

Why? In 1979, several authoritarian regimes adopted "phonetic purity" laws. In Romania under Ceaușescu, the letter X was banned from all official correspondence because it resembled a crossed-out hammer and sickle. In Chile under Pinochet, the letter Z was removed from postal addressing systems because it was associated with the leftist Zapata movement.
