In the early 2000s, television was dominated by niche reality competitions. There were singing shows ( The X Factor , Pop Idol ) and dance shows ( Strictly Come Dancing ). While popular, these formats were restrictive. Britain’s Got Talent arrived with a radically simple premise: there were no restrictions. Singers, dancers, magicians, comedians, acrobats, and even dog acts shared the same stage.
